The Bluegrass State is known as the Bourbon Capital of the World. A short trip in any direction from my shop or home will eventually land you at one of our renown bourbon distilleries. The distilling process to create bourbon requires the corn whiskey (min 51% corn) to be aged in charred White Oak barrels. The barrels are then stored and aged in rickhouses/ rackhouses for several years. Once the spirits have aged to the distillers liking, the used barrels are no longer allowed to be used for bourbon production again. As a result, the used bourbon barrels and their components are a readily available resource to Kentuckians. After years of seeing stacks of deconstructed barrels in a good friends barn, I decided to work with the barrel heads one day in an attempt to transform them into something useful. Here we are!
This authentic Kentucky bourbon barrel head end table was made from a reclaimed Jim Beam bourbon barrel. It features the rickhouse barrel stamp info for this particular batch printed on the surface. I've made every effort to clean up the piece without losing its patina. The bottom is reinforced with a circular piece of plywood which has been ebonized (to match the charred color usually found on the bottom of the barrel heads), along with keeping the focus on the surface. This piece is rustic and as a result: there are some spaces between the jointed planks, there may be remnants of wax around the rim (used to seal the barrel), char marks, dents, divots, etc. While it does show it's character of being part of a local industrial process, it's been cleaned and finished in a Zero VOC film finish to protect from moisture and daily wear. The top has been paired with 3 raw steel hairpin legs that have been clearcoated for protection. This would make an awesome end table, side table, card table, etc for your living room, home office, game room, man cave, she shed, etc. The exact piece you are viewing is the exact piece you will receive!
