The Bluegrass State is known as the Bourbon Capital of the World. A short trip in any direction from my shop or home will eventually land you at one of our renown bourbon distilleries. The distilling process to create bourbon requires the corn whiskey (min 51% corn) to be aged in charred White Oak barrels. The barrels are then stored and aged in rickhouses/ rackhouses for several years. Once the spirits have aged to the distillers liking, the used barrels are no longer allowed to be used for bourbon production again. As a result, the used bourbon barrels and their components are a readily available resource to Kentuckians. After years of seeing stacks of deconstructed barrels in a good friends barn, I decided to work with the barrel heads one day in an attempt to transform them into something useful. Here we are!
This bourbon barrel serving tray is awesome! Made from an authentic bourbon barrel head, this piece would work well to serve drinks, display your favorite bottle or barware, or simply to gift! It features the tongue and groove sides and has been paired with two natural rope handles. This one came off of a Jim Beam barrel, but has no makers markings on the surface. The bottom is footed with two reclaimed Kentucky Tobacco sticks (also made from White Oak) which have been ebonized to match the charred underside of the serving tray. Finished in multiple coats of a satin Zero VOC film finish to protect the wood from scratches and moisture. You can still smell the bourbon aroma! Please note, this was constructed from pieces of wood used in an industrial production setting. As a result, you may notice discoloration amongst the wooden boards, wax remnants around the edges (where barrel was sealed), gaps between planks, dents, divots, etc. I've made every effort to clean the piece up, yet keep it's amazing patina and character. Will ship with felt pads to protect your furniture from scratches.
The exact one you are viewing, is the exact one you will receive!
Measures: 21.5" x 9.5" and the wood is around 1" thick.
