The Bluegrass State is known as the Bourbon Capital of the World. A short trip in any direction from my shop or home will eventually land you at one of our renown bourbon distilleries. The distilling process to create bourbon requires the corn whiskey (min 51% corn) to be aged in charred White Oak barrels. The barrels are then stored and aged in rickhouses/ rackhouses for several years. Once the spirits have aged to the distillers liking, the used barrels are no longer allowed to be used for bourbon production again. As a result, the used bourbon barrels and their components are a readily available resource to Kentuckians. After years of seeing stacks of deconstructed barrels in a good friends barn, I decided to work with the barrel heads one day in an attempt to transform them into something useful. Here we are!
This Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Shelf is made from an authentic whiskey bourbon barrel head. The excess charring found on the bottom has been lightly cleaned up, joints between boards reinforced, lightly sanded to maintain the patina and finished in multiple rounds of satin lacquer to seal the wood and preserve its character. The half round shelf is paired with the black steel pipe hardware shown in the pictures. Combined, it makes an awesome shelf to display anything from your favorite bottle of spirits, to plants, collectible sports memorabilia, photographs, or any keepsake. It may be small, but it is STRONG! Each shelf is different, but the one you are viewing is the one you are purchasing. Feel free to view my other shelves available. Some are different sizes and provide a great visual effect when combined. Please note, this is a rustic piece that was used in industrial production. While cleaned up to the best of my efforts, it may contain: wax remnants around the outside rim (where sealed to barrel), imperfect joints, char marks, etc. Their beauty is found within their patina and character, plus you can feel good knowing they are produced from a reclaimed resource!
Measures: 17 7/8" x 4 3/4". Wooden shelf is approximately 1" thick.
